Directed by the legendary Peter Weir, this film depicts the grueling 4,000-mile escape of prisoners from a Siberian gulag to India. The Moroccan desert was used to simulate the harsh, unforgiving landscape of the Gobi Desert, requiring locations that looked completely desolate and endless.
CHALLENGES & APPROACH
The Logistics of Isolation.
To capture the desperate struggle for survival, the production had to move deep into the dunes, far from any hotel or road. The challenge was maintaining a “supply chain” for the crew in these isolated zones. My role involved managing the cash flow for a mobile base camp, ensuring that fuel, water, and daily wages reached the location on time, despite the challenging terrain.
THE RESULT
The film is a visual masterpiece of endurance. We successfully supported Peter Weir’s vision of total isolation, proving that we could sustain a complex shoot in the most inhospitable environments.
