OVERVIEW
This premium docu-drama series brings the brutal history of the Roman Empire to life. Filmed extensively in Morocco, the production required recreating the visceral atmosphere of the gladiatorial arena. It combined cinematic action sequences with historical accuracy, using the massive sets available in Ouarzazate to stand in for Ancient Rome.
CHALLENGES & APPROACH
The “Arena” Logistics.
Filming gladiatorial combat involves managing a specific set of high-cost variables: stunt performers, specialized weaponry, animal handlers, and hundreds of extras for the crowd scenes. The challenge was delivering “blockbuster movie” action on a television documentary budget. My role was to strictly control the daily “burn rate” of the arena shoots, ensuring that every dollar spent on stunts and costumes translated directly into on-screen production value.
THE RESULT
The series delivered some of the most realistic gladiator sequences ever seen on television. We successfully managed the complex logistics of a large-scale historical reenactment, proving our expertise in the “Swords and Sandals” genre.
