OVERVIEW
This poignant musical drama, set in 1984 Amsterdam, explores the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Unlike the massive studio films I previously managed, this was an intimate European co-production requiring a completely different financial approach focused on maximizing limited resources for high artistic value.
CHALLENGES & APPROACH
The “Indie” Model & Co-Production Finance.
Transitioning from $150M blockbusters to an independent European film presents a unique challenge: every cent must be visible on screen. The financing structure involved complex funding from multiple countries (Luxembourg, Germany). My role was to navigate the specific tax credit regulations and reporting requirements of these European funds, ensuring that the production remained compliant across borders while delivering a visually stunning period piece on a tight budget.
THE RESULT
The film won Best Film at the Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis. It demonstrated my versatility in adapting to the “Independent” financial model, where agility and precision replace the massive infrastructure of Hollywood studios.
